A LOVE FOR LIFE

Once you've been to Sylt, you'll never forget the island. You'll feel the unique atmosphere, the sand, the wind long after you've returned home. Sylt has an invigorating effect, calms your mind, and clears your head.

A unique experience every time

You feel connected to nature and draw on its power. Describing Sylt in one word would be difficult. Sylt is quiet, loud, sensitive, rugged, colorful, powerful, lonely, tranquil, daring, inspiring, exhilarating—unique probably best describes it. The landscape is incredibly diverse—sandy beaches, dunes, thatched Frisian houses, heathland, and the Wadden Sea.

No matter how many times you have been here, you always experience the island in a new way.

SYLT IN TELEGRAM STYLE

  • Sylt, with an area of 99 km², is the largest German North Sea island and the fourth largest island in Germany.

  • In Danish, Sylt is called Sild, in Frisian: Söl.

  • The island stretches from the North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein to the north into Denmark.

  • The island consists of five municipalities and twelve villages with approximately 20,000 inhabitants.

  • Westerland is the island's capital. The train station is the arrival point, whether you're traveling by car train or regular train.

RED CLIFF

The view is breathtaking: the open sea, the crashing surf, a seemingly endless beach, the occasional stroller, and the beach chairs – almost unreal. The cliff edge, up to 30 meters high, rises spectacularly from the sand.

ELBOWS OF SYLT

Nowhere is it more quiet and idyllic than here. Right at the northern end of the island, near the two lighthouses, is the best place to watch the sunrise.

mudflat hiking

The Wadden Sea describes a "sea accessible by wading." It is the most pristine habitat and is considered the world's largest ecosystem of its kind. The Wadden Sea is home to many plants and animals, including algae, seagrass, fish, mussels, worms, crabs, snails, seals, and gulls. 250 animal species are native to this area alone. The Wadden Sea is very rich in nutrients and relatively protected, which is why numerous birds breed here. A hike (guided only!) is an unforgettable experience.

THE UWE DUNE

At 52.5 meters, it's the highest point on Sylt: A wooden staircase leads up to it. Once you reach the viewing platform, you can see the entire island on a clear day.

MORSUM CLIFF

It lies in the far east of Sylt, surrounded by the colorful heathland and the Wadden Sea. The 1,800-meter-long and up to 21-meter-high cliff, composed of diverse rock formations, is geologically unique in Europe. The cliff was formed approximately 150,000 years ago, when glacial drifts pushed the earth's layers together during the Saale Ice Age. What was special about this was that the pressure was so high that the earth's layers tilted and spread out. The earth's layers of dark mica clay, red limonite sand, white kaolin sand, and brownish-yellow boulder clay give the Morsum Cliff its familiar reddish appearance.
